Laser pigmentation removal works by eliminating pigment in the surface of the skin through the body’s lymphatic system. The light used from the lasers is absorbed by the darker areas and “shatters” the pigment, drawing it to the surface of the skin.On average, it takes 4-6 weeks for your body to process the pigment. Multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

Generally, after laser treatments, the pigmented lesions or spots will not return. However, there are various factors that can stimulate new hyperpigmentation e.g. exposure to UV, aging, hormonal factors. Laser pigmentation removal treatments do not prevent new hyperpigmentation from occurring.

After the laser treament, pigment will darken for 7 to 20 days, then will begin to fade. Immediately following a laser session, you may experience redness, tenderness, and mild swelling.

You may feel uncomfortable, the degree of discomfort varies with each person depending on the depth of the pigmentation, the location on the body and the type of pigmentation being removed.

Patients have the option to request prescription numbing cream if they feel the need to alleviate some of the discomfort from the procedure. Cooling packs are always provided to enhance comfort.

Potential risks of the procedure include:

  • Burns or other injuries from the laser’s heat.
  • Scarring.
  • Changes in the skin’s pigmentation, including areas of darker or lighter skin.
  • Reactivating herpes cold sores.
  • Bacterial infection.
